Why You Need To Be A Continuous Learner

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Just in the past week a friend introduced me to a new kind of online web conferencing tool called Join.me. I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks like a nice and most importantly free alternative to WebEx. I plan to write a review at some point.

Think, Try, Learn Graphic

Meanwhile, on Monday Facebook begins rolling out a new kind of service that combines chat, e-mail and text messaging.

I introduced a Realtor last week to a new kind of technology called Microsoft Tag, which allows you to have someone swipe an image, and that leads to a website providing more information about that person or product or service.

So has this been a busy week on the technology development front for me? You bet. Unusually busy? Not really.

About every week I’m barraged by new information on all sorts of new technologies, some of which will become the norm, and others of which will fade like snow on a 40-degree day. And new concepts for SEO and social media pop up with each new sunrise.

It illustrates a larger point, that just as technology is changing and upgrading at faster speeds than in any other period in history, the same rapid transitions are taking place in eduction, medicine, manufacturing, and just about every kind of industry you can imagine.

I say this, because we at PureDriven, and our competitors are increasingly ratcheting up the time we spend investigating new technologies and ideas, and educating ourselves. No longer can you get out of college, and not expect to have to continue your education. If you want to remain relevant in your industry, you need to continue pushing yourself to learn and grow. You also see this transformation online, with online programs teaching you everything from online marketing to real estate.

So that’s the lesson for this week. Just be cognizant that gone are the days of learning once, and using that information over a lifetime.

Chris Brogan, of chrisbrogan.com has long been among my favorite bloggers to read and learn from. I recently picked up his book, Social Media 101, and believe it’s a fantastic book for any small, medium or large business owner who wants to better understand the why and how they should be using social media effectively.
